University of the District of Columbia Honda Campus All-Stars Head to Orlando to Seek National Title
Washington, D.C. March 26, 2004 -— Five students of the University of the District of Columbia will be departing this Friday (March 26) for Orlando, FL where they will represent their school in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), a quiz show-based program competition for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The UDC team has made the initial field of 64 qualifiers, and now heads into their own academic version of "March Madness."
The HCASC National Tournament, held each year in Orlando, pits teams in head-to-head competition. Team members respond to a series of questions covering a broad range of topics during the fourteen minute matches. The winning teams move on to the next "bracket," with the tournament championship matching the top two student teams for HCASC supremacy and a grand prize of fifty thousand dollars.
"The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge is a place where great minds gather to make the connections that will change our future," said Eric Conn, Senior Vice President of American Honda Motor Corporation and founding member of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC). The University of the District of Columbia has fielded a team for fourteen of fifteen years of the HCASC's existence, placing as high as a semi-finalist in 1991-1992.
Senior and four-year veteran Stephen Mwombela is the captain of this year's team, which also includes returning members Olubumni Bakare, Diana Kinney, and Jamaal Waith and a first time competitor, freshman Eric Ness. Professor Willie Faye Garrett will coach the team along with former team player-turned-student coach, Everett Burwell.
The University of the District of Columbia is located at 4200 Connecticut Ave, NW Washington, and is conveniently located at the Van Ness/UDC stop on the Red Line of Metro.
